When Google's AI Mode answers a hotel query, where does the click go? Mostly to a page Google owns. According to a study by Hotelrank that analyzed 84,329 hotel citations in AI Mode, 79.1% of hotel links point to the Google Business Profile. Hotel websites get about 16.3%. OTAs get 3.6%. Those three numbers should reshape how you spend your visibility budget, and this piece explains why.
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience where Google composes the answer itself, cites a small set of sources, and sends clicks to the pages it trusts most.
At RankWit we monitor where AI citations land for hotels every day, and the study's distribution largely matches what we see: the profile is the destination, everything else is context.
What does the Hotelrank data actually say?
The study came out in February 2026 and covers 84,329 citations from hotel-related queries in Google AI Mode. The hotel links break down like this:
- Google Business Profile pages: 79.1%
- Hotel websites: around 16.3%
- OTAs: 3.6%
A note on the source: Hotelrank operates in this market, so single-study numbers deserve the usual caution. A sample of this size still makes the direction hard to dismiss.
Keep in mind what was counted: links inside AI Mode answers to hotel-related queries. It is a snapshot of one surface at one moment, in a product Google keeps adjusting. Directionally, though, it agrees with everything else we know about how Google routes hotel intent toward its own properties first.
The contrast with the wider AI channel is striking. Across AI assistants in general, OTAs capture 55.3% of travel citations, according to Cloudbeds' report on AI hotel recommendations. Inside Google's AI answers, that dominance evaporates: the OTA share of links drops to 3.6%.
Why does the Google Business Profile win?
AI Mode is built on Google's own index and entity data, and the Google Business Profile (GBP) is Google's native record of your hotel. When AI Mode needs a link target it can trust for photos, hours, reviews and location, your profile is that target.
This has an uncomfortable implication: your AI Mode landing page is a page you do not host. You cannot redesign it or add a popup to it. You can only feed it.
It also has a useful one. The profile is free to manage and every field is editable. Each attribute you complete, each photo you update, each review you answer becomes material Google's AI can use in the answer itself. Our Google Business Profile guide for hotels walks through the fields that matter most.
One detail decides more than any other: the booking link on your profile. When the AI Mode click lands there, that link is the next hop. If it points to your booking engine, the reservation is direct. If an OTA occupies that space because the direct link is missing, you earned the visibility and the intermediary collects the booking.
What does this mean for your direct bookings?
Read the two big numbers together. Nearly four clicks in five go to your profile, and roughly one in six goes to your website. Both are destinations where no OTA commission applies, and both can carry a direct booking path.
That makes AI Mode unusual. In most AI travel answers the intermediaries hold the citations; here, the traveler lands on an asset you control or influence. For a hotel trying to grow its direct channel, this is the rare arena where the defaults work in your favor.
The direction extends beyond Google. In March 2026 OpenAI moved ChatGPT from in-chat checkout to discovery, handing transactions to the Expedia and Booking apps, as Skift reported. Assistants are becoming recommenders, and the booking happens wherever the traveler lands next. If that landing point is your profile or your site, the booking can be direct.
We traced this wider acquisition shift in how AI is redefining user acquisition.
What should you do this quarter?
Four moves, in order:
- Complete the profile. Categories, amenities, photos, rates context, booking link. Treat every empty GBP field as a blank line in your AI Mode answer.
- Synchronize your website with the profile. About 16.3% of clicks still land on your site, and assistants cross-check the two. A mismatch weakens both destinations.
- Keep reviews flowing. Recent reviews give Google's AI current material to summarize, and give travelers a reason to pick you once they land.
- Test your presence monthly. Run your destination's hotel queries in AI Mode, log which properties appear and which links Google cites. Our AI visibility guide for hotels covers the full measurement routine.
None of this is exotic work. It is the same data hygiene that good hotel marketing already required, now with a measurable new payoff.
FAQ
What is the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-written summaries shown above classic search results. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab where the whole answer is AI-composed and the traveler can ask follow-ups. For hotels the practical consequence is similar: fewer blue links, a handful of cited sources, and a premium on being one of them.
Does AI Mode take traffic away from hotel websites?
Some of it, honestly. Queries that once produced a website visit can now end inside Google's answer. But around 16.3% of AI Mode hotel links still reach hotel sites per the Hotelrank data, and profile clicks stay commission-free. We think the metric worth watching is direct bookings, not raw sessions.
Are OTAs losing ground because of AI Mode?
Not across the board. Inside AI Mode links they sit at 3.6%, but across AI assistants in general they capture 55.3% of travel citations, according to Cloudbeds. Booking and Expedia remain strong in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Treat AI Mode as the one channel where the defaults do not favor the intermediaries.
How do I check whether my hotel shows up in AI Mode?
Run the queries your guests would use, in AI Mode, from a clean browser session. Log whether you appear, what Google says, and which link it cites. Repeat monthly with the same set. If you are absent, the causes and fixes overlap heavily with why your hotel isn't showing up in ChatGPT.
